Fear Itself – Skin and Bones (Director’s Cut)

Skin and Bones is another episode of Fear Itself that made this short-lived series worth it to me, especially because of Doug Jones’ presence (known for his non-human roles in Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

Rural ranch owner Grady and his friends have traveled to the cold and lonely mountains, and his brother Rowdy is attending to his farm during his absence. Grady returns, hobbling toward the house when Rowdy is preparing to go out and look for him, but Grady is not himself, visibly injured and suffering frostbite.

However, Grady is far worse off; he is possessed by a Wendigo, a malevolent cannibalistic spirit. He ate his fellow hunter in the bitter cold and let the spirit of the Wendigo inside with its consuming hunger.

Skin and Bones is much more than a short creature feature; it involves the bond between brothers and affairs of the heart. Before the Wendigo spirit, Grady had his suspicions but after he knew for certain of his wife’s infidelity.

His wife Elena ends her husband’s life after being forced to chop the man she loves into pieces and cook him for dinner. And in the end, she kills the creature her husband has become, protecting her sons.

Skin and Bones was a nice little thrill, and Doug Jones’ performance was the icing on the cake!
